Links and the Evolution of Snapchat

Social platforms are built with one thing in mind — get users and keep them for as long as possible. This is why it’s no surprise that linking out through social channels usually isn’t an initial feature (unless of course the site is built on the idea of links as is the case with Reddit). Instagram has been a notoriously walled garden with only one place to link out, hence the “See link in bio” refrain put to use by brands, publishers and influencers alike. Now, Instagram is allowing verified profiles to, at the very least, share links in Instagram Stories.

This week we got news that the most walled garden of all is opening up to links. Through a new tool called Paperclip, users can share links in the Snaps on Snapchat. From there, viewers can swipe up on a Snap to view a web page in Snapchat’s internal browser.

Snapchat’s move represents another shift among many for Snapchat. The platform that first dismissed advertising and is now embracing it is allowing users to share external websites in messages.
