Twitter News Comes Full Circle with Topics

In 2016, Twitter made a move. It recategorized itself in the App Store by moving from being categorized with the likes of Facebook and Instagram in “Social networking” to “News.” The switch was a signal of where Twitter saw its potential growth coming from. Twitter wanted to be the place where users consume news. Here we are three years later, and news is shared on Twitter as much as ever. Beyond that the company has had recent financial success in the last few quarters, but new issues have popped up. New user on-boarding has been a challenge, and the echo chamber on Twitter has not only been recognized as a problem, it’s been identified as detrimental to democracies and free society.

Entertainment Social: The Costs and Benefits

Social media’s gotten pretty heavy as of late. Mark Zuckerberg’s been defending his platform’s policy of allowing blatant falsehoods to be promoted on Facebook. Twitter’s had to update its policies by allowing political figures’ tweets to remain on the platform even if they go against the its rules and policies. These social platforms are having to take stances and defend those stances because, whether they like it or not, they have become political tools. They are where views are shared, campaigns are mobilized and news is consumed by users.

Things have gotten heavy on social; so heavy in fact that they may very well collapse under all that weight.

Quantity or Quality Positioning Divide

It’s earnings season, and the narratives coming out of financial reports from the big players—Facebook, Amazon, Google and so on—went really as expected. The biggest surprise or shift, however, was the recent success of Snap Inc. and the continued success of Twitter. The two platforms are, for now at least, starting to emerge from the shadow of the 800 and 900 pound gorillas in the room, the digital duopoly that is Facebook and Google.
