It’s earnings season, and the narratives coming out of financial reports from the big players—Facebook, Amazon, Google and so on—went really as expected. The biggest surprise or shift, however, was the recent success of Snap Inc. and the continued success of Twitter. The two platforms are, for now at least, starting to emerge from the shadow of the 800 and 900 pound gorillas in the room, the digital duopoly that is Facebook and Google.

It aimed to deliver users a platform that valued privacy above all else, and it aimed to offer a a service that wasn’t just another broadcasting platform feeding users content. Snapchat would instead be a messaging platform, focused on interactions between friends that disappear because after all, that’s how interactions IRL work.
It was a product welcomed by its users. It respected them, and it put users first like no one else had up until that point.
So what happened?

More is being asked of tech platforms. More is being asked that they do “what’s right” and serve the greater good. This past week we saw Alex Jones removed first from Apple podcasts and then from Facebook, YouTube for violations of their policies.
